Egg Shells

I love a good farm fresh egg! And because we have our own chickens, we use a lot of them. Though the month of January was a lean production month, the hens just didn't get enough daylight and some days we only got two or three eggs. I had to buy several dozen eggs from the grocery store and I couldn't help comparing the color and taste to what my eggs are like.

I have been grinding the eggshells and I thought i'd show you how I like to do it.

Eggshells provide calcium, I like to feed them right back to the chickens, much better than buying oyster shells in my opinion. And I've heard you can add them to your tomato plants as you're planting to help with tomato rot. I'll be trying this this spring!

I have a crock on my counter that I toss the eggshells  into every day. I try not to stack them tight so that they can dry. They need a few days to completely dry before grinding. I've heard you can put them in the oven but haven't tried this.

Then, I put them in a large zipper plastic bag and crush them up a bit to make them more compact.

I suppose you could stop at this stage, or crush them completely with the rolling pin, but I've been using a coffee grinder to get them really fine. It's one I never use, I think it would be hard to clean it, better to keep it separate I think. Sometimes they can be found for cheap at a thrift store.

I do my grinding in my laundry/mud room as it can be a little dusty. After grinding about six or eight small batches, I'm done!

It feels good to reuse and not just pitch these in the trash. And I know there are many other good uses for them as well…

Random Roundup

He acquired an Aeronca Chief. And has been trying to get it up and running.
I picked so many of these ruby red gems.

We got our first egg! Always exciting!
Making Banana Muffins for the Lemonade Stand.
 Pretty cute, right?
And then this happened! Burst pipes meant a flood in our kitchen and holes to patch.
At least I was prompted to pull out our range. I guess I should do this more often?
We especially love our blue eggs!
These boards may not look like much but I have big plans for them. Just wait!
He lost his first front tooth. Twice as cute and twice as mischievous!
 We went to Jamestown!
 I love the ropes!
My sweetie reused an old copper pipe to make this little trellis for my climbing rose.
I love this, dirty feet and all.
We had about a week of all the cousins on my side of the family together, so fun!
Scored this at a little shop in Eastern Virginia. It will go above the tub in our Master Bathroom, just a smaller version of the one in our Room.
Free sunflowers in a patch in front of a farm. I love that someone wanted to share.

We have zinnias!
Several of these pies have been made and consumed here. All the fresh berries and peaches have made it easy.
School is starting in a little over a week from now, it's the end of a great summer! But I hate change… it will be nice to settle back in to a routine and welcome fall.

Thankful and blessed,

Melissa

Garlic Rocker

I found this little tool at a little shop in Florida. Just rock it back and forth over a garlic clove, minces easily and the clean up is simple. I think that's why I like it, so simple. And as your rinsing it, the stainless steel removes the garlic smell from your hands.

Just thought I'd share a good find with you all, go HERE to buy one.

Right Now

We are two days in to the holiday and I've enjoyed the slow mornings so much already! The children maybe not so much, I had them help me do a marathon house cleaning yesterday and then last night my little guy came down with a fever :(

I have a few projects to show you, one being this buffet that I painted.
I can't seem to find the before picture but you can imagine, dark, speckled brown finish with lots of dings.

I put my hot chocolate tray on it. This is always a favorite in cold weather!

We are gifted every year with a large poinsettia and this year I decided to stop fighting the red and just go with it. I'm really liking the pops of red for now even though it's not something I want to live with long term.

I found this toast holder? at Goodwill. I like to put old photos or cards in it.

I had fun making this Anthropologie knock-off wreath with my daughter's help. I like it, though it does sort of look like shaggy carpet. :)

I copied this fireplace scene from Pinterest. I can't seem to link to it. Every winter I wish for a real wood fire, this is my make-believe one!

I am re-upholstering my yellow chair. I love the pop of yellow sunshine it brings and will miss that but it was getting too shabby with a hole in the cushion and some stains.

Our local U-fab store just moved a bunch of their velvets downstairs to the discounted section and I was excited to find a lovely brown velvet for $10 a yard! (They have some really nice browns, grays and beiges for those of you who are local.)

This will be interesting as I've never worked with velvet or a channel back chair before.

The children had fun constructing these reindeer cookies - what would we do without Pinterest inspiration?

See you later...

Creating Cozy

I was inspired by the hot chocolate stations that I've seen here and there online, especially this one from Lemonade Makin' Momma, so I made one myself. It's really fun and my kids love something sweet and hot when they come home from school.

The paper cups came from The Dollar Tree and the hot cocoa I got at Trader Joe's.

My husband was asking about my wreaths on the dining room windows, and made the comment that, "some things are just better if you make them yourself".  (I had bought them)

So yesterday I decided to make a wreath for our front gate.

I found this great tutorial at one hundred dollars a month . This seems like a neat blog, I haven't had time to fully check it out.

I didn't have a wreath form and was impatient to get started so I made a form with some wild grapevines that I had. Now the weight of the greens is pulling it down into an oblong shape.
I guess I should have bought a proper wreath.

These clippings came from our Leyland Cypress trees.

I didn't have floral wire, just used some twine that I had. It was actually pretty easy.

I just noticed that my gate is stained rather badly, oops!

I must get busy, I have a messy house to whip into shape, then shopping and baking!

Hope each of you have an amazing week with whatever is planned!

Enjoy God's gift of family and friends!

Punkins

I have heard, that if you wash them in bleach water they last longer. So mine all got a bath.

I love Fall, and I love Punkins!

Try saying it my way, it will make you smile and people will look at you funny :)

Hello, Lovely Peach Cake!

My peaches are ripening a few at a time... and this is the happy result!

This cake is not quite shortcake, a little sweeter and more moist.

It is my Mother's old family recipe, and is also great with strawberries if you want something other than a traditional biscuit-like shortcake.

'Mom's Not-Shortcake'

2 cups flour

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup sugar

1 egg

3tsp. baking powder

1 cup milk

1/4 tsp. salt

And like a lot of old recipes, you have to figure out in what order to add ingredients - no directions.

I baked it in a 9" round pan and then sliced it to make two layers, then layered whipped cream with sliced peaches.

This was so good, we even had some for breakfast this morning!

Have a happy weekend!

Yellow

We had a relaxing, encouraging weekend!

My husband was at the grocery store with the children, and asked them what "Mom" would like. Little Brother said, "Momma needs flowers!"

Slay me!
So sweet, and he is fast learning the way to a woman's heart!

Sunday morning I made banana bread using the 'Mitford Cookbook'.

Love the series and this cookbook!

Enjoyed the rest of the day spent with friends!

This monday, I feel ready for whatever the week brings.

Hope your weekend was peaceful and renewing!

It's a cold morning!!

Just right for a big bowl of oatmeal...

with cinnamon, chopped pecans, blueberries....

and a splash of maple syrup.

This morning is our first frost. It was 29 degrees when I got up, brr!!

Yesterday, I made pumpkin pies.

First time from scratch. It was a lot of fun!

I love the brown spices.

Hope you're all staying warm and enjoying the fall season!
